Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne Dewitt was arrested early Sunday morning by the South Carolina Highway Patrol on charges he was driving under the influence. Troopers were able to locate a Ford truck at a traffic stop in Hanahan, South Carolina in which Sheriff Wayne DeWitt was the driver. ABC News 4 reports that Sheriff DeWitt was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center where he refused to take a Breathalyzer test. DeWitt was subsequently charged with a DUI, and with leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury. Sixty-three-year-old DeWitt, who has served at Berkeley County Sheriff since 1994, is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center until he is sent back to Berkeley County for bond court.
